Hey All😁
The festive season in India was in full bloom (Diwali was lush by the way) and hence the delay in posts and updates. Well, the festive season is here again. It has started to feel a lot more Christmassy!
And Boom! Christmas was a hit too. Enjoyed it! Hope yours was great too.
My Apologies for skipping and delaying the blog post. But it has been a hectic year, trust me.
However, I am back at it, since we are nearing exams for the February/March assessment, I would like to take you through an important concept/topic for IGCSE FLE, which would allow you to win half the battle for Directed Writing.
I will spill the beans soon but before anything else, I am sharing a quick poster, or rather say, a summary of today's lesson that will help you massively. You could download it or email me (jyotisngh30@gmail.com) to send it to you, whatever is convenient.
Here you go:
By the way, the above can be used for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 IGCSE First Language English.
I will explain this with an example from a past paper question:
The question is taken from IGCSE Paper 2 Directed Writing and Composition 0500/02 from the 2020 examination:
Q. Imagine you are a pupil in a school which does not have a school
council.
Write a speech to be given in a school assembly, giving your views on
whether or not students should participate in decisions made about the
school.
In your speech, you should:
• evaluate the views given in both texts about student participation
• give your own views, based on what you have read, about whether a
school council would benefit students and teachers.
Base your speech on what you have read in both texts, but be careful to
use your own words. Address both of the bullet points.
Begin your speech: ‘Thank you for coming to listen to me today …’.
Write about 250 to 350 words.
Up to 15 marks are available for the content of your answer, and up to
25 marks for the quality of your writing.
The GAPSS for this is as follows:
Genre: The kind or category of writing. In this case, it is a speech. The rules and conventions of writing a speech must be adhered to.
Audience: The person/people the write-up/genre is intended for. The audience for the above question is the school assembly that will include the Head Mistress, the students, teachers, etc.
Purpose: The intention of writing the text. In this case, the purpose is to discuss and evaluate the views about students participating in school decisions.
Speaker: The person writing/speaking/chatting in the text. In this case, it is the pupil in a school.
Style: The register or tone of writing. In this case, it is discursive, analytical and semi-formal as the speech will be addressed to both the Head Mistress/fellow students and teachers of the school.
Hope the above explanation of the acronym GAPSS helps in understanding the basics of a Paper 2 Question for IGCSE First Language English.
In my next post, I am going to take care of GAPSS for Paper 1 IGCSE English First Language English.
Until then, take care of yourself and yours, please!!!
